Attack of the Environmentalists

Fox News today published an op-ed article on its website by the Vice President of Business & Media Institute, Dan Gainor.

In his piece titled ‘Rain or Shine, Environmentalists Want to Control Us,’ Gainor’s argument against global warming can be summed up in five words: cold winters disprove global warming.

But the weather has been inconveniently cold. Thirty-two states have experienced record or near-record lows this winter –- poking holes in the predictions of imminent fiery doom.

What Gainor doesn’t understand is that unusually cold winters in a few cities in the United States do not dispel global warming. Apparently, Gainor would have us believe that the globe is the United States. Well, that’s  not really a far cry from certain egocentric Republican ideology.

Gainor would also have us believe that environmentalists spawn power-hungry control-wielding monsters bent on world domination. Environmentalists are not as marginal as Gainor would make us believe as 61 percent of American believe global warming is occurring or will occur in the future, according to a 2008 Gallup poll. No, these people were not magically brainwashed into believing in the ‘hoax that is global warming’.

The following are highlights from Gainor’s article with my comments interjected:

This is the winter of environmentalists’ discontent. They desperately want the earth to be warming to prove Al Gore’s truth inviolate and they are going to make you pay thousands of dollars for it no matter whether it’s true or not.

Is this similar to the Bush administration’s desperation in trying to prove Saddam Hussein had WMDs and then making us pay trillions of dollars for it even when it wasn’t true? Actually, not even close.

Just as the global warming reality is cooling, the opposition is heating up. This week marked the second annual “International Conference on Climate Change” in New York, sponsored by The Heartland Institute. It brought together hundreds of climate skeptics from around the world and was headlined by European Union President Vaclav Klaus.

Mr. Klaus, the former prime minister of the Czech Republic, is a member of the Civic Democratic Party, a center-right party. He is a partisan politician, an economist at best, not a scientist. That’s like letting George Clooney chair a conference on Open Heart Surgery Advancements and Procedures; he may have played a doctor, but that is far cry from an expert.

Klaus got to the heart of the matter during his opening night address. The climate debate isn’t just about temperature, he told the gathering of scientists and public policy experts. He said “environmentalists want to change us and our behavior” because “their mission is control.”

Yes, we are hell bent on world domination, next.

They are working hard to take that control.

We work full time to take back our environment and put it back into the hands of the people, not private industry.

Forget the laughably inept Kyoto treaty. Environmentalists and politicians are working to give birth to its bastard child of a successor in Copenhagen this December. The midwives are already prepping for the birth of this Frankenstein baby in the run up to the G-20 conference in April.

The “International Conference on Climate Change” was sponsored by the Heartland Institute, which is, according to its website, “a national nonprofit research and education organization based in Chicago. Founded in 1984, its mission is to discover, develop, and promote free-market solutions to social and economic problems.” The key word is free-market. While free-market is not the antithesis of environmentalism, (think green energy) we should be suspect.

Heartland’s monthly publication, Environment & Climate news, is reviewed by “more than 100 academics and professional economists, and nearly 100 experts on the staffs of other think tanks serve as contributing editors of Heartland’s publications.” What constitutes an academic.

Isn’t it convenient that Gainor’s own institution Business & Media Institute co-sponsored the event?

Until Next time.
